Proverbs 17:28
Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding. Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
Holding peace and shutting the lips is counted as wisdom and understanding, so that even a fool appears wise when silent. Silence in this sense is strength and eloquence, especially when feelings are stirred. When tempted to speak or act unadvisedly, the course is to look to Jesus and hold peace rather than speak a word that hurts another's feelings, causes irritation, or does grievous harm. Bridling the tongue and refusing to answer anger with harsh words prevents greater fury and helps endure trials of patience.
Those without experience in a matter show wisdom by remaining silent about it. Speaking without knowledge spreads reports far from the truth. Keeping this silence brings sunshine into the home. It lets people of different temperaments and dispositions live and work closely together under difficulties and perplexing problems without minding little differences.
