Proverbs 17:9

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

Love that covers a transgression seeks love by working to keep another person's faults from being spread, while repeating a matter separates even very close friends. For husband and wife, that covering means burying each other's faults in the heart as in a grave and telling them to no one else. Husband and wife are to be all to each other, keeping faults and family troubles within their own confidence and taking them to God rather than disclosing them to a third person as a special confidant, thus maintaining a sacred circle and a sacred shield around the family that no outsider is allowed to enter.

Neither spouse is to keep secrets from the other in order to share them with others. Neither is ever to joke at the expense of the other's feelings or to complain about the other to others, in sport or in any other way. Exposing private matters and repeating faults, even in what seems like harmless joking, ends in trial and estrangement, separates close friends, estranges husband and wife, and brings bitterness and trouble.
