Father Carries His Daughter to a Stone Towerby emmanuel_higgins

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

The Lord himself is a strong tower and fortress to whom the righteous run in trust and find safety and protection. His name means His revealed character and love, and Jesus Christ himself is that tower, rock, fortress and living hope in whom believers are secure. That safety is shelter from Satan's power, deceptions, assaults and conflict, so that even the weakest soul who takes refuge there is safe and the tempter flees before such trust. Running into it means looking away from self to Jesus in trusting dependence and surrender, clinging to Him, fleeing to Him and staying close to Him in living faith rather than in one's own wisdom and strength. In prayer and calm, simple faith the soul communes with God and is strengthened, refreshed and given rest, peace, courage and hope in every need, weakness and hardship.

Name and Strong Tower

The name in which safety is found is the revealed character and love of the Lord, a strong refuge for all who trust in him. Jesus Christ himself is that strong tower, rock, fortress and living hope, and the righteous are safe by running to his name. He is the believer's rock of defense, and those who trust in him implicitly are secure and will never be failed. He is strength, help and courage through trials and difficult circumstances, a refuge and comfort in whom those who trust and wait can rest in his care and nearness.

The Holy Spirit represents Jesus Christ and is the ever-present refuge to whom people can run and be safe, always present with them. The heavenly Witness and Messenger standing by is likewise a shield and fortress to run into for safety when trying and provoking things arise, especially things that seem unexplainable and out of harmony with God's counsel. Staying there by self-control keeps peace and confidence in God, while letting passion rise and speaking retaliation leaves that safety and destroys peace and confidence, injuring oneself and grieving and wounding the Holy Spirit of God.

God's Word is the tower, fortress, haven and place of strength where people take refuge and are saved. It is the strong fortress into which the righteous run, and entering it happens by searching Scripture for oneself and turning to it. Taking refuge there brings safety and strength to bring wrong tendencies under God's control and learn to do what is right. Pastors, teachers and instructors bring people to that safety by directing them to this secure foundation in God's Word rather than to alarming or fanatical claims, teaching them to study the Bible themselves and presenting its great, grand, ennobling truths with a deep, earnest, fervent, calm spirit full of sound sense that stops the mouths of opposers.

Safety From the Enemy

The Lord himself is a strong tower and fortress, and the righteous run to him in trust and are safe and protected. Running to him means looking away from self to Jesus, refusing to dwell on weakness and complain, and instead trusting, depending on and surrendering oneself to him for protection. When human weakness leaves little courage, strength and help come from that dependence and trust, and grace and power are given in accordance with faith. Seeking his help by faith brings his special assistance and blessings to sustain those who are suffering, weak and infirm. His grace refreshes and nourishes the soul, and Christ abiding within leads to continual praise.

That safety is protection from Satan's power, deceptions, delusions, assaults and conflict. God's love is an impregnable fortress against those deceptions and attacks, and living in close contact with Christ keeps a person firmly held by him. Those who cling to him and heed his warnings can run to him in times of trial and be safe from being overcome by Satan's delusions. The soul can turn to him in prayer and receive divine light that strengthens and sustains it in its conflict with Satan. His name is a source of power against the enemy and a place of safety for the righteous, so those who trust in him can face Satan's attacks without fear, because the work belongs to God and not to human effort and confidence in its final triumph rests on God.

Even the weakest soul who takes refuge in that mighty name is safe from the tempter. Such safety comes not by personal strength but by relying on the Lord rather than on oneself. Satan trembles and flees before that trust.

Trusting in Jesus as this fortress gives confidence and freedom from fear even when Satan's power is encountered and the work of God is under attack. The Lord's power has no limit and he is invincible, so his people can rely on him for protection and stand firm without faltering against unseen spiritual enemies.

Running Into Refuge

Running to the tower is looking away from self to Jesus, trusting, depending on and surrendering to Him for protection and seeking His help by faith. He is a mighty deliverer and a place of safety for the righteous, and grace and power are given in accordance with faith rather than in dwelling on weakness and complaining. It is clinging to Him and heeding His warnings, fleeing to Christ and staying close to Him through difficulty and temptation. That safety rests on living faith in His power, not on one's own wisdom, strength or ability, and keeps believers from being overcome by Satan's delusions in times of trial.

It is trusting in the Lord and waiting patiently for Him as ruler, helper and refuge. He is the only dependable hope and the helper in every strait place, so reliance on Him must not waver or be displaced by any human agency, approval or guidance. Such trust brings peace, and His protection and help give strength amid discouragement and the pressures of circumstance. The soul turns to Him in prayer, and calm, simple faith and secret prayer bring communion with God where divine light and strength are received to sustain and endure in conflict with Satan.

His people need not fail, be discouraged, or give way to despondency and unbelief, but should walk before God in humility. He is a present help in every time of need, a helper and source of courage and hope who gives peace and support amid weakness and hardship. Running to Him brings safety to those who make Him their confidence and trust, and His grace refreshes and nourishes the soul. Jesus is refuge, strong tower and comfort in whom trust and waiting find rest in His care and nearness, and turning to Him in weakness and great need brings safety, freedom and happiness. Bringing every burden to Jesus as personal Saviour gives peace with God and union with Christ, with Christ abiding within leading to continual praise.

Help in Every Trial

The name of the Lord as a strong tower gave courage to the reformers amid the dangers at Augsburg, and their singing of God as their tower revived faith and eased fear. In persecution and fierce opposition his servants are not left alone, but are to rely on him with increased faith rather than give way to despondency and unbelief, for truth will finally prevail and those who suffer with Jesus will share his joy. Children who live by religious principle and put their trust in God are fortified by that place of strength and safety against the vice and corruption around them.

Those who choose him as counselor and rely on him are safe in a strong place of defense, and safety requires staying close to Jesus and holding right principles in the heart and in every business transaction, since absorption in business that neglects worship, prayer and Scripture leaves people open to secular thoughts, unbelief and temptation. In difficult, vexing work he is a safe refuge for counsel and shelter, enabling a person to remain calm under insult and provocation with self-control for faithful service. When trying and provoking things arise, especially things that seem unexplainable and out of harmony with his counsel, the heavenly Witness and Messenger standing by is a shield and fortress to run into for safety, and staying there by self-control keeps peace and confidence in God, while letting passion rise and speaking a word of retaliation leaves that safety and destroys peace and confidence, injuring oneself and grieving and wounding the Holy Spirit.

Those working for the salvation of others who turn to God in need for help and heavenly wisdom have their needs met, and through this dependence they gain spiritual strength and knowledge of the truth and become a blessing to others. He is a strong tower of strength and efficiency, a sure refuge and help when his work is hindered, and he regards self-sacrificing efforts that depend on him. Those who are suffering, weak and infirm receive his special assistance, blessings, comfort and sustaining help, for Jesus is refuge, strong tower and comfort in whom those who trust and wait can rest in his care and nearness and find courage and strength even in weakness and infirmity by seeking his help by faith and depending on him.

His Word is a tower of strength and strong fortress where people may take refuge and be saved by bringing wrong tendencies under his control and learning to do what is right. Entering it happens by searching Scripture for oneself, and pastors, teachers and Bible instructors bring people to that safety and secure foundation when they direct them there rather than to alarming or fanatical claims. They do this by teaching people to study the Bible themselves and presenting its great, grand, ennobling truths with a deep, earnest, fervent, calm spirit full of sound sense that stops the mouths of opposers.
