Humble Man Kneeling Then Crowned by Christby KandD

Proverbs 18:12

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.

Humility comes before honor, and humility before God comes before honor before people. A haughty and proud heart comes before destruction and failure, while a meek and lowly spirit is favored by God. Those who strive to be first without humbling themselves will be last in His favor. The verse warns against pride and self-esteem and calls for modest conduct.

Those who recognize their own weakness and unworthiness and feel deeply their need of divine aid will plead for it. God joins their weakness to His strength and their lack of wisdom to His wisdom. The Holy Spirit gives them glimpses of Jesus that strengthen and uplift the soul.

The most childlike disciple is the most efficient worker for God, because heavenly intelligences can cooperate with one who seeks not to exalt self but to save souls. From communion with Christ such a one goes forth anointed to work for those perishing in sin. He succeeds where many of the learned and intellectually wise would fail. Heaven gives a high place before people to the worker who, like John the Baptist, takes a lowly place before God. Faithful service in a lowly position in love may lead in God's time to greater responsibility and widening blessing to the world.
