Proverbs 18:14

The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

A person's spirit can sustain bodily weakness and infirmity. A wounded spirit brings anguish that is hard to bear, because the heart is more sensitive than the body. Cruel sarcasm, hateful words, and persecution over differences of belief can wound the spirit deeply. Its pain lasts longer than bodily injury. Worldly honors, riches, pleasures, and enjoyments cannot ease a wounded spirit or the torments of conscience.

A wounded spirit is a broken spirit that weakens moral, healthy, and efficient life. Sound sleep will cure a wounded spirit and restore vigor. It does so just as sleep cures irritability of temper, peevishness, uneasiness, an overworked brain, a weary body, nervous dyspepsia, the languor and prostration of consumption, hypochondria, the blues, headache, and neuralgia.
