Proverbs 19:25

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.

Punishing a scorner warns the simple and inexperienced to beware and take heed. Reproving a person who has understanding leads that person to gain knowledge and grow in understanding. Accepting correction is valuable, and this is a prominent lesson taught throughout Proverbs.

A person with understanding accepts deserved correction and learns from it. Receiving reproof with self-control and humility is evidence of moral strength and helps to develop that strength. Refusing correction when at fault reveals a defect of character. Because a person of understanding gains knowledge when reproved, reproof is a fitting way to admonish editors whose influence can be used for public good or harm.
