Proverbs 19:26

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

Proverbs 19:26 belongs to the section comprising chapters 1-24, made up of Solomon's proverbs probably gathered by him or in his time. It is one of Solomon's writings found in the last fifteen chapters of Proverbs, written about the year 1000 and later. The book is a compilation of sayings that express familiar truths.

The verse means that a son who mistreats his father and drives away his mother is one who causes shame and brings disgrace. To waste the father is to waste his resources, and such a son who also drives his mother away brings shame and reproach. Respect for parents is thus presented as a practical moral duty.
