Proverbs 2:11

Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:

Discretion preserves and understanding keeps and guides and protects the one who receives them. The promise is fulfilled when wisdom enters the heart and knowledge becomes pleasant and welcome and settled in the soul. Receiving this wisdom requires inclining the ear to wisdom and applying the heart to understanding and seeking diligently as for silver and hidden treasure. It requires staying in a prayerful frame and seeking earnestly in prayer, and practicing the precepts of the word, for the Lord gives wisdom and knowledge and understanding from His mouth.

This keeping is not mere acquaintance with facts and theories but practical nourishment and stimulation of spiritual life that protects mind and life and gives life and health. The wisdom gives the fear of the Lord and the knowledge of God and discernment of righteousness and justice and judgment and equity and every good path. It includes understanding that Christ is the Son of God and the Author and Finisher of faith. It delivers from the way of evil and evil people, from those who speak crookedly and perversely, and from abandoning upright paths to walk in darkness.

It guards the mind from ruin, diseased imagination, vague unrest, appetite for unwholesome mental food, and the unbalanced mind produced by absorbing fictitious tales and novel reading. Heeding it builds upright character and prepares even young people to be trusted with responsibilities. It guides especially speech and conduct so the mouth is opened with wisdom and the tongue shows kindness and a timely word can be spoken to those within influence in service.

As a warning, it calls those in Battle Creek who trust selfish and unclean and non-upright men, act on their ideas, follow rumors without a message from God, and become unsettled to gain conversion and a firm hold on the Lord. It calls to face the foe in aggressive warfare with unreserved surrender, asking in faith for guidance to go out to places where land can be obtained and cultivated rather than centering and placing confidence in men. It calls for refusing in any crisis to be drawn under the influence of selfish and self-serving men.
