Proverbs 2:13

Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;

The verse describes evil men who abandon the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, turning away from right conduct and integrity to live in morally wrong ways. It is a warning against abandoning integrity for wrongdoing. Wisdom, understanding, and knowledge preserve the upright by guarding and delivering them from such evil men and from following their way.

Seeking God's wisdom leads to upright character and good judgment. Leaving the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness means placing confidence in men whose lives have not been clean and upright and seizing and acting upon their ideas. The warning applies to people whose selfish and unclean lives lead them to spread trouble and draw others after them.

Those who leave the upright path in this way are selfish and self-serving, and in any important crisis they make trouble, drawing under their influence those who ought to have learned by experience to cut away from them. The light of the Sun of Righteousness is not shining upon them. They hear a rumor and run with it without any message from God, they are unsettled and have not a firm grip upon the Lord, and they need to be thoroughly converted. This has been the condition in the going out from the center at Battle Creek.
