Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

The Lord himself gives wisdom, and knowledge and understanding flow from what he speaks. This gift must be diligently sought by treasuring his words, listening attentively, praying for insight, and searching as for hidden treasure rather than trusting one's own intelligence. Those who seek in this way come to revere the Lord, find true knowledge of him, and learn what is right and just in every good path. When received, this wisdom enters the heart, becomes delightful to the soul, and guards conduct and character from evil and from abandoning integrity. All true learning and development spring from knowing him, so education apart from the wisdom that comes from God alone cannot fulfill its purpose.

God Gives True Wisdom

The Lord himself is the giver of wisdom, and knowledge and understanding come from what he speaks from his mouth. True higher education is imparted by him, with whom are wisdom and strength, and without the wisdom that comes from God alone learning cannot fulfill its purpose. Knowledge of God is the source of all true knowledge and real development. That knowledge is revealed wherever one turns, in the mental, physical, or spiritual realm, apart from the blight of sin. Any line of investigation pursued with a sincere purpose to arrive at truth brings touch with the unseen, mighty Intelligence working in and through all, and brings the human mind into communion with the mind of God, the finite with the Infinite, with an effect on body and mind and soul beyond estimate.

The true insights of human teachers and thinkers are only reflections of the light that comes from him. Because human powers are weakened and vision restricted, nature reveals God only partially and imperfectly, so people need the fuller revelation he has given in his written word. Wisdom is found in that word because it comes from the infinite mind rather than the finite mind. The treasures of knowledge are with the Most High as an unquestionable, inexhaustible fountain from which all may draw.

Through the Bible, which he gave as a revelation of himself, he communicates wisdom and knowledge and understanding. It bears the impress of God, and was preserved uncorrupted through ages of darkness despite efforts to bury it under error and to obscure its plain meaning. It is designed as a lesson-book for childhood, youth, and manhood to be studied through all time, and every new truth discerned gives a fresh disclosure of his character and a clearer knowledge of his will as the medium of communication between God and man. He stores sound wisdom for the righteous, shields those who walk uprightly, and guards the paths of judgment and preserves the way of his saints.

Seeking Wisdom Diligently

The wisdom promised must be diligently sought by receiving and treasuring his words, inclining the ear to wisdom and applying the heart to understanding, listening to him, praying for understanding, and searching earnestly as for silver and for hidden treasure. It is not gained by relying on one's own intelligence and supposed insight, inventions, or conjectures, but by seeking God for what only he gives and speaks. Those who so receive and search his words can find the knowledge of God, for his word gives understanding even to the simple.

The treasures of the word lie like veins of precious ore hidden beneath the surface, like a mine holding rich veins of gold and silver that must be dug for, and much revealed wisdom stays dark to men because the jewels of truth lie buried beneath the rubbish of human wisdom and tradition. Skimming over the surface does little good, and the treasures stay hidden to many because they are not searched for with earnest perseverance until the golden precepts are understood. They are revealed only to the earnest, humble, prayerful seeker through thoughtful, taxing investigation, by explaining thoroughly every passage read and letting one scripture serve as the key to unlock others, with the evidence of truth found in Scripture itself. The rich, hidden meaning is then unfolded by the Holy Spirit, making the word plain to understanding, to purify and prepare those who receive it to become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King.

Gaining this wisdom means learning in the school of Christ to follow on to know the Lord, weighing carefully all sides of a question and stepping firmly by faith rather than standing in a negative, waiting position. It is received morning by morning with an opened ear, fitting the learner to speak a word in season to the weary. Such seeking leads to understanding the fear of the Lord and finding the knowledge of God, learning reverence for him. It brings understanding of righteousness and judgment and equity and every good path, of what is right and good, with discernment that preserves from evil and from leaving the path of integrity.

This wisdom is to be valued above gold and silver, for it will not wash out in the heat of summer but will stand the test of trial and remain firm. Those who gain it will not follow their own impulsive conjectures. The wisdom from his mouth is found in the Bible as the Book of books, granted in probationary time to become acquainted with its truth in order to gain eternal life. It is to be sought by devoting the mind to its precepts and practicing them, which brings life and health and sound understanding, instead of gratifying carnal desires and following personal inclinations by devoting the mind to fictitious tales and novel-reading, which ruins the mind, diseases the imagination, and creates unrest and appetite for unwholesome mental food.

Wisdom Shapes Life

When wisdom is found it enters the heart and knowledge becomes pleasant to the soul, while discretion preserves and understanding keeps the seeker. This inward work shapes upright character and gives discernment that keeps a person from evil and from leaving the path of integrity. Such finding comes through earnestly inclining the ear to wisdom, applying the heart to understanding, listening, praying for understanding, and searching as for silver and hidden treasure, and it leads to understanding the fear of the Lord and finding the knowledge of God, with understanding of righteousness and judgment and equity and every good path. Mere acquaintance with facts and theories, even important ones, is of little value and brings no new life to the soul unless put to practical use as food that nourishes and stimulates spiritual life.

Knowledge of Christ and other valuable knowledge should fill the mind and help shape character, because God is the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Everyone is therefore under obligation to reach the height of intellectual greatness, and it is the privilege of all to know that with every advance step they are made more capable of honoring and glorifying Him. Yet none should be puffed up because of knowledge acquired, since He is an inexhaustible fountain from which all may draw. The truth that wisdom with knowledge and understanding comes from what the Lord speaks makes Him the source of true education for children and youth. It bears directly on the responsibility of parents, and of mothers in the training of children, to teach children to be faithful to God.

The Lord places the physician in a very responsible position and gives him knowledge and understanding so that he may do justice and judgment and reveal a true missionary spirit in an institution established to present truth in contrast with error. He stores sound wisdom for the righteous, shields those who walk uprightly, guards the paths of judgment, and preserves the way of His saints, so that they come to understand righteousness and judgment and equity and every good path. Those serving in needy fields are therefore not given burdens so heavy that they must sacrifice mental, moral, and spiritual strength by overdoing and trying to carry the whole load. They are to keep fresh to teach others how to work, with prudence in speech and planning, trusting these blessed assurances in prayer while casting helpless souls upon Jesus Christ. The verse also gives instruction for honoring the Lord in word, correcting too much visiting and unprofitable conversation by making speech profitable.
