Proverbs 2:7

He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

God lays up sound wisdom in store for the righteous and is a shield to those who walk uprightly, guarding the paths of justice and preserving their way and the way of His saints. This stored wisdom is not the mere acceptance of new theories or acquaintance with important facts, which by itself imparts no new life to the soul. It is food for the soul that nourishes and stimulates spiritual life when put to practical use.

In Solomon's teaching, wisdom, knowledge and understanding come from God's mouth, and the Lord gives them to those who receive His instruction and seek diligently. The seeking is by inclining the ear to wisdom, applying the heart to understanding, and searching earnestly as for silver and for hidden treasure. It continues morning by morning with the ear wakened to hear as the learned. It is learned in the school of Christ by following on to know the Lord, weighing carefully all sides of a question, and stepping firmly forward by faith as laborers together with God rather than standing in a negative waiting position. Constant perseverance in the right direction gives standing place, and rational effort in cooperation with Christ brings success and victory, giving the tongue of the learned to speak a word in season to the weary.

Those who so seek come to understand reverence for God and find the knowledge of God. They come to understand righteousness, judgment, equity and every good path and what is good. Wisdom enters the heart and knowledge becomes pleasant to the soul, bringing happiness and life to everyone who lays hold of it and building upright character. Discretion watches over them and understanding keeps them. This delivers them from evil people, dark paths and the way of evil, so that trusting God's wisdom and walking in obedience is safety, unlike relying on inexperienced human judgment.

This wisdom is valued above gold and silver. It is an experience that endures trial without fading and will not wash out in the heat of summer, so that those who gain it do not follow their own impulsive conjectures. The verse gives blessed assurance for workers not to weaken themselves physically or morally by overworking, but to stay fresh to teach others how to work and not grow discouraged because they cannot carry the whole load. The Lord does not lay on burdens so heavy they cannot be carried without loss of mental, moral and spiritual strength, and carefulness in speech and planning is good.
