Proverbs 20:30

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Painful correction cleanses away evil rather than merely inflicting hurt. The discoloration of a wound and blows that reach inward picture discipline that goes beneath the surface. Outward suffering and inward stripes together portray a chastening that penetrates to a person's inner life. By reaching that depth, such discipline corrects what is inward and removes the evil lodged there.
