Proverbs 21:24

Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.

The name scorner belongs to the proud and haughty person, the one lifted up in self-importance. His inward scornfulness is known by the way he deals, for he acts in proud wrath. That wrath is kindled when his pride is touched and his self-esteem is wounded.

Pride-driven anger presses outward into speech, breaking out in angry words that wound and do harm, and therefore the tongue must be bridled and held back from hasty utterance. To cherish and carry such a wrathful spirit is itself the mark that identifies a man as the scorner. For that reason conduct under provocation must be weighed beforehand with careful thought, because every course of action will itself be weighed in the judgment.
