Proverbs 21:5

The thoughts of the diligent tend only to plenteousness; but of every one that is hasty only to want.

The thoughts, plans and steady efforts of the diligent tend only toward plenteousness and good results, while everyone who is hasty in thought or action tends only toward want and lack. Diligent thought leads to abundance and diligent planning leads to abundance, whereas acting hastily leads to lack. Careful, diligent planning leads to abundance and plenty, while haste leads to want and lack.

Needing to work for what one has builds strength and encourages study, while having easy access to things leads to neglecting books, as seen in the contrast between Ned and Charley. Prayerful study and meditation on God's word is a diligent use of the mind that need not displace other duties and can make those duties easier. Such study helps Christians know righteousness, maintain good works, bear fruit for God, and be ready even as children to explain the truth and give a reason for hope.

In Christian literature work, persistent and steady labor can succeed even in a difficult field and accomplish good, and those who labor now can look forward to rest. In establishing a denominational school, moving cautiously with careful planning can bring success, though success need not mean financial self-sufficiency since the school may depend on conference support or donations. Careful planning of a general meeting to avoid serious mistakes and to achieve the greatest results without needless delay illustrates the value of diligence. The settlers' thrift illustrates the contrast, in that they prepared for a second telegraph line by putting up wooden poles before the iron poles arrived.
