Proverbs 21:9

It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.

It is better to live cramped in a corner of the housetop than to share a wide, spacious house with a brawling, quarrelsome woman. The corner is cramped and isolated, exposed and uncomfortable, yet it is preferable to the comfort of roominess joined to continual quarreling.

The broader principle is that a cramped place with peace is better than a spacious home filled with quarrels. The scolding tongue has been known from ancient times for its vehement, overpowering, intolerable quality, and the scolding of a brawling, angry woman routs and silences even strong and brilliant people. To argue with such scolding or to try to stop it is useless, like trying to dam a foul flood, so wisdom stands aside and lets it pass.

A wife's scolding can make home life so painful that it wrecks the home. A brawling atmosphere in the home is painful, especially for children who are forced to live in it continually.
