Proverbs 22:9

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.

This is one of Solomon's writings in the last fifteen chapters of Proverbs, written about the year one thousand and later. A bountiful eye is a generous outlook that expresses itself in giving.

The generous person who shares food and bread with the poor shall be blessed, which commends practical generosity toward people in need. Having such a bountiful eye toward the poor is a duty attached to a promise of blessing. To claim such generosity while withholding help exposes covetousness.

It belongs to the closing morning readings of Proverbs and is read together with 2 Corinthians 8, presenting giving bread to the poor as the grace of liberality whose necessity is taught in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9. Generous giving means returning received gifts to God and sharing them in faith, which gladdens the giver and helps advance salvation. God rewards the faithful giver with the blessing of the new creation.
