Proverbs 23:14

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Correcting a child with the rod can deliver his soul from hell by rescuing him from the destructive end of wrongdoing and from spiritual ruin. Such correction serves the child's good by bringing him to recognize his fault and turn from it, and it protects him from the unhappiness and spiritual harm that uncorrected faults bring. The verse calls parents to use their God-given authority to restrain and correct their children rather than excusing sin.

That authority is not to be used to gratify the parent or to assert arbitrary control, but in love for the child's salvation. Physical punishment is sometimes necessary, yet every other and milder means should be tried first, and the rod is to be used only when milder measures fail. Such discipline must never be given in anger, but with love and prayer.

When correction is needed, parents should show sorrow for the pain it causes the child and pray with the child for forgiveness and for protection from Satan. They should lead the child to repentance, and that repentance may itself bring victory without needing to use the rod. Faithful correction of this kind supports happier families and a better society.
