Proverbs 23:5
Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.
The verse warns against setting the eyes upon wealth and fixing desire and attention upon it. It warns against laboring to become rich. Its caution against longing for a rich ruler's food belongs to a broader call to restrain appetite and not work to get rich. Riches are temporary and not lasting, and they can vanish suddenly, flying away like an eagle toward heaven, as suddenly as a bird taking flight. They cannot satisfy, so trust is not to be put in them.
