Proverbs 27:13

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

The verse warns against binding oneself as surety for a stranger and directs taking his garment as a pledge when he does so for a strange woman. It stands as part of God's direct warning that entering into suretyship can bring serious loss to the one who signs. Even so, rare circumstances remain in which it is right to become surety in order to help a friend in need.
