As the fining pot for silver, and the furnace for gold; so is a man to his praise.
The old Greek rendering gives burning as furnace, keeping the sense of a place of intense heat for trial. The refining vessel for silver set beside the furnace for gold makes human commendation the counterpart to fire in assaying metal. As flame tests and proves silver and gold, so the praise addressed to a person tests and proves what kind of man he is.
