Proverbs 3:17

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

Her ways are pleasant and her paths lead to peace as the very nature and outcome of living by wisdom. This wisdom is more precious than riches, honor, gold, silver, jewels, or anything that can be desired, and those who hold her fast find life and happiness. This wisdom is Jesus, the Man of Calvary, whose way is pleasant and peaceful, known by searching Scripture and loving Him, and those who love Him prove by daily experience at every step that following Him brings pleasantness and peace. Keeping this pleasant and peaceful path means fearing God and keeping His commandments by loving God supremely and neighbor as self, obeying His laws and just restraints, living temperately and healthfully, and finding that obedience takes nothing good away but guides safely toward good and heaven. Those who follow Christ in living faith, abide in Him, and gladly do His bidding find joy, brightness, and rest even amid trials, because His presence banishes unrest, renews the heart, controls appetite and impulse, and gives peace of conscience.

Wisdom's Pleasant Peaceful Way

The ways of wisdom are pleasant in their very character and her paths lead to peace as the nature and outcome of living by wisdom, making wisdom the way of a happy life. That wisdom is more valuable than riches and honor, than gold and silver, than jewels and coral and pearls, than anything else a person may desire, and those who hold fast to her find life and happiness. Wisdom is Jesus, the Man of Calvary, whose ways are pleasant and whose paths are peaceful, and searching Scripture reveals His matchless charms so that seeing them leads to loving Him. Those who love Him declare at every step from daily experience that His way brings pleasantness and peace, and by that testimony they represent Christ to the world with a hope full of immortality.

The wisdom Christ gives is offered to troubled people, and through His sacrifice pardon is made available even to the greatest sinner. Obedience to God guided by wisdom is not deprivation or misery but brings real joy and well-being, while the way of transgression leads to misery and destruction. In contrast to the hardship of the transgressor's way, following wisdom means obeying Christ, denying self for His sake, enduring trials, and gaining victories over temptation as steps toward final victory. The path is narrow and holy where sin cannot be tolerated, yet access is open to all, and with Christ as guide even the greatest sinner can walk safely in its light. Walking in wisdom's pleasant ways that lead to peace is a journey toward eternal life and home, while the transgressor's hard road ends in despair. The path of the wise may be rough and demanding, but Christ has gone before and made it passable, and even through tribulation there is joy to refresh the weary because God walks invisibly beside those who love Him. As they continue upward they recognize His care more clearly with increasing glimpses of heavenly glory, and their praise grows brighter.

Obedience to God's Laws

Wisdom marks out a path of pleasantness and peace, and that path is kept by fearing God and keeping His commandments through loving God supremely and one's neighbor as oneself. Wisdom utters her voice to show the way to walk, and loving God and neighbor in this manner is walking in that wisdom. Even amid the annoyances and troubles that come from living in a fallen world, those on this path have no loss of reason for confidence, because Christ has overcome the world.

Following God in humble trust and loving obedience to the teachings of His word brings a life marked by pleasantness, peace, and surety. His words and His ways carry that pleasantness and peace even when those who choose their own course feel distaste toward Him and allow opposition to rise in their hearts against Him. His laws guide into safe paths of peace and happiness, and obedience to them takes away nothing good but leads toward good.

Obeying just rules and wise regulations that restrain and guard the young from evil is no cause for rebellion, but improves character and happiness and leads in paths of peace. The path of obedience to nature's laws and the laws of life and health is a path toward heaven that hears and follows wisdom's voice and call. Turning from harmful habits and receiving God's renewing grace prepares the heart to hear and accept truth. Temperance and regularity belong to following wisdom's ways, fostering a sweet, serene disposition that smooths life's path while strengthening self-control for life's duties.

The fear of the Lord lies at the foundation of real prosperity and is not opposed to health or happiness. Being at peace with God and knowing that He hears prayer brings deep satisfaction. The path of wisdom and holiness is pleasant and peaceful, so devotion to God does not harm health and stands in harmony with cheerful happiness in social life. Those who walk that way truly enjoy life's real pleasures, without vain regret over misspent or wasted hours and without the gloom, horror, and distress of mind that trouble the worldly when exciting amusement is gone. The ways of wisdom and holiness bring true enjoyment rather than bondage or deprivation, giving peace because the heart receives God's love and Christ's presence, while selfish ideas about pleasure are replaced by a life shaped by God's principles.

Joy in Following Christ

Living faith that works by love and purifies the soul is the way of wisdom, marked by trust and confidence and gladness of soul, and when Christ abides within, words become wise and helpful. Those who follow Christ and gladly do His bidding know joy and peace even amid trials and difficulties, because His presence makes the path bright and the life bright, banishing unrest and discontent.

Christ’s ways are pleasant and His paths bring peace, and learning and practicing the lessons of the King of peace reveals this character of His way. The path prepared for the ransomed is not an unpleasant, exacting burden, but doubts and gloomy forebodings and cares for earthly treasure make the way rough, while those who come to Jesus with their burdens and follow His path find joy and peace and rest. This peace is found in salvation through Christ, whose sacrifice and merits bring into favor with God, and obedience leads to exaltation with Him. Communion with God elevates and refines the mind above earthly pleasures, and grace renews the corrupt nature, brings appetites and impulses under control, enables daily victories and moral independence, and gives peace of conscience in doing what is right.

This peace and joy belong to those who abide in Jesus and remain connected with Him, whose grace subdues and transforms words and actions, while a stubborn, rebellious heart can shut out the influence of God’s grace and the joy of the Holy Spirit. Those who thus abide and connect with God find true joy, unlike those who depend on amusement and company for happiness, for communion with God brings gentleness and good thoughts and noble aims, with actions changed by grace. Wisdom’s paths are pleasant not because they offer frivolous worldly amusement, but because a life of usefulness and faith and communion with God and right-doing brings true happiness and peace of conscience, pointing to the righteous person’s future home and everlasting reward as themes that ennoble the mind. Christian hope comforts believers and guides them to true happiness, so young people should seek wisdom through studying God’s word and meditation and prayer as the best uses of their spare moments.
