Proverbs 3:2

For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

Keeping God's law, commandments, and instruction adds length of days, long life, and peace, and this promise is fulfilled in this life. Remembering and keeping that law and those commandments in the heart is what adds the long and peaceful life, and the promise calls both old and young to give diligent heed. The instruction to be kept includes the teaching given in Proverbs 2-4, whose keeping brings long life and peace.

The promised life includes life and health to the whole body, for God's instruction brings wholeness as well as years. In its context, the promise belongs with safety, freedom from fear, and sweet sleep for those who trust in the Lord. Jesus's patient submission under mistreatment exemplifies this obedient keeping in practice.

The promise, together with its counsel to keep God's law, equips a person to face mistreatment without resentment and to resist pressure to conform. For youth, keeping God's laws together with wise institutional rules guards them from harmful influences, improves character and happiness, and leads them in paths of peace.
