My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
Sound wisdom and discretion are to be held firmly and kept continually before the eyes, never allowed to depart or slip away. Kept in this way they bring and preserve life to the soul within. They also bring grace to the character. They guard each step and guide a person safely so as not to stumble, keeping the walk steady through the dangers of a world of sin, evil, and temptation.
Retaining them brings peaceful rest without fear under the Lord's protection. Wisdom is called life by calling a cause by its effect, since wisdom and the commandments are called life because keeping them leads to life. Heeding instruction and reproof and choosing wisdom's path leads to life, while refusing it brings spiritual ruin and death. True wisdom in its highest sense is found in Christ, who is wisdom from God, and likeness to God and the highest development of human thought are possible only through him.
