Proverbs 3:23

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

Keeping God's commandments and walking in the way of obedience gives a safe course through life, so that the foot is kept from stumbling. To walk uprightly is to proceed securely in God's light, and to walk in that light is to be safe from stumbling. Turning away from that light leaves a person liable to stumble.

Walking in the light means walking uprightly even when it is crucifying to self and requires painful denial of self. God's grace sustains those who follow the right path amid temptation and hidden dangers, so that obedience remains safe. Holding fast to God and trusting in Jesus brings safe guidance through difficult places, so the believer does not stumble or fall.

This walk keeps from serious failures and gives sure and safe progress in duty toward those who have erred. Failure to walk in the light leaves religious experience sickly and stunted in growth. Walking in the light through earnest effort prompted by love for souls strengthens the heart and develops the graces.
