Proverbs 3:4

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man is one of God's precious promises for this present life, given to those who keep His law. Favor and good understanding before God and people, together with length of days, long life, and peace, are given to those who do not forget God's law but keep His commandments in the heart and who hold fast to mercy and truth by binding them about the neck and writing them on the heart. Remembering God's law and keeping His commandments in the heart in this way brings long life and peace and gains approval and true insight before God and people.

The promise belongs only to those who are humble and contrite in heart, obedient and faithful, who fear God and walk in the truth and obey His voice by heeding the light given. To such people God gives ample light and grace according to their needs and fills their hearts with peace and courage and confidence. Special help is given in the last days, when Satan's devices are abundant and deceptive and corrupting. This instruction is to be diligently heeded by both old and young.

Keeping mercy and truth in the heart was lived out when Jesus patiently bore insults and unfair treatment without retaliation, showing that faithful obedience does not have to insist on personal rights. In His youth Jesus clung to this promise when mistreated by His brothers and questioned for submitting to harsh and despiteful usage. He explained wisdom as reverence for the Lord and understanding as turning from evil, and by the promise He refused resentment and remained separate from evil ways. By this stored word He was armed against His enemies.
