Proverbs 31:24

She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.

In its setting among the description of the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31:10-31, the verse defines the true sphere of woman as thorough and practical knowledge of household duties and domestic labor. It means she cuts, makes and mends her own clothing with her own hands. She prepares food in a wholesome and palatable way, and she washes, sweeps, dusts, and works in the kitchen and garden. She makes good use of time and serves the needs of her household with her own hands when required. Such domestic skill is beyond price and more important than painting, fancy work, music, or advanced academic learning. The happiness of the family depends on the efficiency of the wife and mother.

Beginning at nine or ten years old, a daughter should take a regular share of household duties and be held responsible for how she does her work. She is to learn from her mother as an apprentice, in order to be fitted to become a wife and mother, head of a family, and useful member of society. A woman educated in this way rules over her home as a queen in her own domain. She is fully competent to guide and instruct her children and to direct servants. She understands the human body and the principles of hygiene, diet and dress, labor and recreation, and the best methods of treating disease, so she can care for her children in sickness.
