The Virtuous Woman Spins and Gives BreadBible World

Proverbs 31:28

Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.

The verse portrays a virtuous wife whose speech and conduct are marked by wisdom and kindness and whose care for her household is diligent, and for this her children rise to bless her and her husband praises her. That blessing and praise are not given lightly but are earned by thorough knowledge and faithful performance of household duties, as the wife and mother presides as a queen in her own domain. Her fitness includes practical skill to cut, make and mend clothing, to prepare food in a wholesome and palatable manner, to guide and instruct children, to direct servants, and when need requires to minister with her own hands to the wants of her household.

It includes understanding the mechanism of the human body and the principles of hygiene, diet and dress, labor and recreation, and the best methods of treating disease, so that she can care for her children in sickness instead of leaving them to stranger nurses and physicians. This fitness to become wife and mother, head of family and useful member of society is learned from childhood, when at nine or ten years old a girl takes her regular share of washing, sweeping, dusting, kitchen and garden work and is held responsible for it, apprenticed to her mother, because inefficiency in the wife and mother wrecks the happiness of the family. A mother earns that honor by learning how to care for her children's health and personally protecting them from harmful food, medication, and neglect, as part of her high and sacred responsibility of loving, informed care.

The verse shows the value of a mother who nurtures her children's minds and influences her family toward a higher life, so that a cheerful, welcoming home becomes a lifelong blessing to parents and children. The children's rising up to call their parents blessed is the result of godly parenting, when parents study, trust and obey God's Word and faithfully guide, educate and train their children according to His will. In particular, children bless their mother and parents whose care has benefited them because, by trusting God, they were not allowed to form harmful habits leading to illness through intemperance in eating and drinking or improper dress, and so were raised to avoid the diseases caused by those habits.

The call to honor and praise a faithful woman applies to aged pioneers, whom younger workers should esteem for their labor and treat tenderly, rising to call them blessed rather than showing indifference.
