Apply Thine Heart Unto Instruction with Scenes of JesusBible World

Proverbs 4:1

Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

Children are called to listen carefully and to attend to a father's instruction in order to gain and to know understanding. The instruction in view is good teaching, a father passing on the law and commandments that he himself learned from his own father. It is reproof urging children to choose wisdom, which is the path of life.

Solomon himself received such instruction from his father, and it helped lay the foundation for a virtuous character. His wisdom is linked in part to his parents' care and to his father's steady instruction. Giving heed to instruction in this way makes submission to correction a prominent duty in family life and in faithful service to God, belonging to practical wisdom for the common experiences of everyday life. The verse therefore supports teaching children Bible truth through attentive, practical instruction.

Refusing that instruction and breaking the laws governing spiritual life leads to spiritual disease and death. The parental instruction enjoined should prepare children for adolescence by explaining its physical changes and significance, helping them avoid dangers harmful to body and morals and understand their value to the human race.
