Proverbs 4:13

Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.

Instruction is teaching in the way of wisdom and leading in right paths, and the command is to grasp it firmly and never let it go because it is life itself. Taking hold means heeding the warning and turning to the Lord with full purpose of heart. Keeping it keeps steps from being unhindered and keeps from stumbling when running, and it keeps from entering the path of the wicked and going in the way of evil men, which must be avoided, passed by, and turned from. The wicked way is darkness where people cannot sleep unless they have done mischief and caused some to fall, feeding on wickedness and violence and stumbling without knowing why, a condition that fills the world today. Those who keep instruction walk the path of the just as a shining light growing brighter unto the perfect day.

The reproof, correction and instruction in righteousness given by God about the management of Seventh-day Adventist schools must be grasped firmly, kept carefully, obeyed strictly and never let go, for it is life to the schools. Teachers in the younger schools must not go over the same ground passed over at Battle Creek College, where popular amusements for students were brought in under a deceptive garb and sanctioned by teachers. That leaven of evil when sanctioned at the heart of the work would spread to all connected schools. No one should teach who has not himself obeyed God's Word, and unless the education given is of a different character from that given at Battle Creek College there is no use in spending money on land and buildings.
