Proverbs 4:22

For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

They are God's words, instructions, commandments, wisdom and principles, and to those who find and receive them they are life itself and health and medicine to the whole body and all the flesh, to cure sickness, prevent sickness, and restore health to body and soul. The promise is received by attending to the words, keeping them before the eyes and in the midst of the heart, keeping them as precious, and trusting and following God's Word rather than relying on feelings. The laws of nature are the laws of God over the physical, mental, moral and spiritual, so transgression of the laws of nature is transgression of the laws of God, while obedience brings blessing and secures the highest possible development of mind and soul and body in harmony with the Creator. True religion in harmony with those laws directly promotes health, lengthens life, increases happiness and heightens enjoyment, teaching self-control, serenity and temperance, while faith, cheerfulness and hope lighten anxiety and care and benefit the body, and brooding over sorrow and worry harms health. Living this out means teaching truth in physical as well as spiritual lines, relieving suffering by the natural agencies God provided, preventing sickness by regulating appetites and passions, and presenting the body to God as a living sacrifice fitted for acceptable service in preparation for this life and the life to come.

Life and Health Promised

They are God's words and instructions, His commandments and law, His wisdom and principles. They are to be found, received, kept and obeyed, kept as something precious and lived out closely guarded in physical as well as spiritual lines.

They are life to those who find and receive them, and health and medicine to the whole body and to all the flesh. They cure sickness and prevent sickness, restore health to body and soul, renew health and life, and uplift humanity through the revelation of God's goodness and mercy.

The promise is received by attending to the words, keeping them before the eyes and in the midst of the heart, finding them, receiving them, keeping them as precious, and trusting and following God's Word rather than relying on feelings. Finding this life requires striving lawfully with a single eye to God's glory, leaving self and the preferences of others out of the question, and cherishing wisdom and seeking it with great simplicity, and then the feet will not slide.

Obeying Brings Wholeness

The laws of nature are the laws of God, covering the physical and the mental and the moral and the spiritual, so that to break the laws of nature is to break the laws of God, while obedience to His instructions in both physical and spiritual well-being brings the promised blessing of life to those who receive them and health to all the flesh. His words give life and health to those who find and keep them, serving as medicine both to cure sickness and to prevent it, because those laws were designed for good. Heeding the laws that govern the body and caring for the physical organism supports health and helps develop strong mental and moral powers.

Obedience secures the highest possible development of mind and soul and body, building strong mental and moral powers and bringing people into harmony with the Creator. Following God's laws for physical well-being helps prevent and cure sickness while promoting that threefold development. This practical training in harmony with Him is what true wholeness requires.

True religion, by bringing a person into harmony with God's physical, mental, and moral laws, directly promotes health, lengthens life, increases happiness, and heightens enjoyment of its blessings. It teaches self-control and serenity and temperance, ennobles the mind, refines the taste, sanctifies the judgment, makes the soul a partaker of heaven's purity, and opens a never-failing fountain of happiness, while the path of transgression leads to misery and destruction. The claim that religion is not conducive to health or happiness in this life is therefore false.

Faith in God's love and overruling providence, with cheerfulness and hope, lightens anxiety and care and fills the heart with joy and contentment in the highest or the lowliest lot. A cheerful spirit benefits the body and aids digestion and nutrition, while brooding over sorrow and worry harms health by interfering with those processes. Obedience to God's laws in nature and in revelation is a means of restoring health, so religion should be made prominent in the care of the sick rather than treated as harmful to recovery.

Living out this truth means teaching truth in physical as well as spiritual lines, instructing in the needs of the physical organism, relieving suffering by the natural agencies God provided and by the revelation of His goodness and mercy, and preventing sickness by regulating appetites and passions. Bible truth thus restores both soul and body, renews health and life, and becomes a powerful means of uplifting humanity and relieving suffering. Teaching these health-restoring and health-preserving principles is part of obedience to God's law.

Keeping this law closely guarded and living it out presents the bodies God created to Him as a living sacrifice fitted for acceptable service. Such keeping promotes happiness in this life and aids preparation for the life to come and for the Lord's second coming, and living by the commandments kept as something precious is part of entering into life. Christ's grace gives power to obey and to cooperate with God in restoring health to body and soul.
