Proverbs 5:13

And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!

The latter part of Proverbs 5 is a warning against sexual sin, given to guide the young man amid sexual temptation, and its instruction warns men and women generally against the sins condemned there. Wisdom requires obeying the voice of teachers and inclining the ear to those who instruct, giving heed to instruction and obeying counsel rather than refusing correction. Filling the soul with this chapter means taking its teaching to heart rather than refusing the guidance of teachers.

Refusing to obey teachers and heed instruction leads to sorrow and regret, uttered in the lament of one who has chosen sin and darkness. It is the sorrow of refusing to listen to teachers and instruction by one who has given himself to sensual pleasure and will ultimately regret rejecting instruction and failing to heed his teachers. Rejecting reproof and the path of wisdom brings spiritual disease and death, seen in the ruined life of one who ignored instruction and broke God's law. That remorse comes as a consequence of one's own choices, and regret cannot undo the harm done or restore what was lost.

Not listening to those who instruct leaves young people without wise guidance about sexual dangers, and without it they may take a false step into a life of shame. Parents must not let false modesty keep them from giving their children this instruction.
