Proverbs 5:14

I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.

The verse exposes the shame and ruin that follow refusing instruction and leaving the path of wisdom. To ignore reproof is to lose manhood and to be stained with crime. Such disgrace is the suffering that comes from breaking spiritual law.

The verse also exposes the ruin that falls on young women kept by false modesty in dense ignorance of sexual vice and of the sacred functions of the body. Girls sent untaught to earn a living in great cities walk alone on perilous paths. There a single false step commits them to a life of shame, swelling the ranks of unhappy women who sell themselves, and so they come to be almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
