The Young Man's Crossroads from Proverbs 5by Joel

Proverbs 5:19

Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

The verse stands in the latter part of Proverbs 5, which holds deep philosophy to be read slowly and pondered. The chapter warns young men against sexual temptation and instructs them in sexual purity. Filling the soul with its teaching guards against snares that stir up sexual passion. Its warning against the sins condemned there should take hold on the heart of both men and women, though it is not suitable to read in a mixed assembly of men and women.

The verse commands finding joy and satisfaction only in the wife of youth, treating every other woman as a stranger. It pictures faithful marriage in which husband and wife belong to one another and their love and companionship bring lasting happiness. The verse restates the beginning law that a man shall leave father and mother and cleave to his wife and they shall be one flesh, which was given without written penalty except for the rights of the head of the family.

The verses embody the eternal principles of purity, loyalty, indissoluble unity, inviolable sanctity and perfection of love, showing that a union made by God is holy and any other union is profane and common. Even the slightest infringement of that sacred relation is fatal to the purity, love, confidence and unity of spirit between husband as head and wife as body, a truth left for man to learn by actual contact and heart experience. The marriage bond is an exclusive union whose joy, when grounded in God, overflows in blessing to others.
