The Young Man's Crossroads from Proverbs 5by Joel

Proverbs 5:23

He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

The closing portion of Proverbs 5 contains deep philosophy to be read slowly and thought over, and its instruction should take hold upon the hearts of both men and women to warn against the sins condemned there, though it is not well to read it in a mixed assembly of men and women. It warns that the person without instruction shall die, emphasizing the importance of heeding instruction and accepting correction, for rejecting instruction and refusing reproof leads to death. That death is spiritual death, the ruin that follows breaking God's spiritual laws by refusing reproof and the path of wisdom.

A person must therefore spend his energies gathering true wisdom or he will inevitably perish in his own ignorance and folly, with no escape. To go astray in the greatness of his folly is to be destroyed for lack of knowledge, for ignorance is a great enemy of righteousness and peace and a most prolific cause of confusion and misery. In the greatness of his folly the fool shall go astray. In contrast, the wise fear God and obey Him in everything, for fearing God and keeping His commandments are the way to wisdom and good understanding.

The warning belongs to the instruction young people need against sexual temptation and the snares that foster and arouse sexual passion. It shows the heart must be guarded diligently because the course of life flows from it.
