Sleeping Sluggard Beside Ants Carrying Grainby emmanuel_higgins

Proverbs 6:10

Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:

The sluggard's inactivity is pictured as taking a little sleep, a little slumber, and a little folding of the hands, repeated again and again as an excuse for putting off work. The plea is always for only a little more rest, yet it is idleness and postponement that keep delaying the work that should be done. Even such small degrees of sleep and idleness draw away from diligent toil and lead toward poverty. Regular work is honorable and life-giving, while the drone is condemned, so industrious habits and diligence are to be cultivated.

Applied spiritually, those who know the truth but remain inactive in Christian service are asleep like the sluggard. They fold their hands in inactivity and neglect the missionary work God calls them to do and the work they could do. This applies especially to those who claim to believe the final message of mercy yet remain spiritually asleep instead of actively serving. Even a little spiritual sleep or delay can lead into self-deception. When the truth has been made plain from Scripture and a person still refuses to be convinced, Satan takes possession of mind and heart and leads that person away from allegiance to God.

Sleeping a little longer means delaying repentance and spiritual effort while danger approaches, leaving a person unprepared. The call therefore is for immediate self-examination, confession, and zeal. The time of mercy is brief, and delay may leave a person facing judgment without excuse.
