Proverbs 6:17

A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

The verse belongs to a list of conduct that God hates, including sowing discord among fellow believers. Its warning about a proud look applies to outward appearance, so that pride shown in appearance, costly clothing, or conformity to the world denies Christ even when a person confesses Him with the lips.

Its warning includes evil-speaking that sows discord and spreads dissension and strife among fellow believers. Tale-bearing and assuming evil of others bring misery and exclude true happiness. The person who spreads such evil-speaking reaps deadly consequences within the soul.

Those who practice what the verse lists incur God's displeasure. Those who practice these things must humble themselves, fast, and pray for them to be removed. These wrongs should be confessed before God and the church before prayers for healing are offered. True confession of Christ is shown by a humble, blameless life shaped by His character and by the purifying influence of truth.
