Proverbs 6:20

My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

The command is for a son to hold fast his father's commandment and not forsake his mother's law. It is the same call to heed parental instruction given in Proverbs 1:8. It stands as part of the sustained instruction of the first seven chapters of Proverbs to give heed to parental teaching and to the reproofs that summon a person to wisdom.

The words that follow portray those parental teachings as bound continually upon the heart and kept close about the person. Kept in that inward and constant way, they direct conduct, keep guard over the sleeper through the night, and speak to him when he awakes. That instruction marks out the path of life, while to reject it and to break God's spiritual laws brings spiritual disease and ends in death and ruin.

Parents stand in the place of God to their children, who by nature trust them as fountains of wisdom and truth. To deceive children therefore plants skepticism, guile, and willfulness, which may afterward grow into rejection of the parents' faith and of the Bible itself.
