Proverbs 6:22
When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
The opening chapters of Proverbs, the first seven, are an earnest appeal to the young to listen to teaching and to take the road of wisdom, for that road is the road of life, while turning away from its correction brings spiritual sickness and death. The directing, protecting, conversing power described is instruction in wisdom held fast in the heart, instruction first imparted by parents to their children for daily living.
What holds true of such parental counsel holds true of the entire Bible as God's living written Word. It gives threefold companionship through the whole course of existence: it leads a person in going and in everyday conduct, it keeps watch over the sleeper through the night, and it speaks to the one who wakes. That speaking is God's own voice conveying words of life to the soul, to be listened for as though God were uttering them directly and newly to each hearer.
So understood, Scripture is a faithful guide and guardian, a constant companion and friend that personally addresses its readers. Its morning talk is not far-off preaching or lecturing or scolding, but close, personal fellowship and communion in human speech, drawing the hearer near to Jesus as a friend.
