Roe Escapes the Hunter's Hand and a Bird the NetBible World
6:5Proverbs 6:5
Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
The opening chapters of Proverbs give reproof and instruction calling the reader to choose wisdom, the path of life, over a course leading to spiritual disease and death. To go surety means to bind oneself to pay another person's debt if that person cannot pay. Anyone who has become surety is warned to free himself at once, with the urgency of a roe fleeing from the hunter and a bird escaping from the fowler. Treating suretyship as a harmless formality and assuming the debt will never fall due is a dangerous trap that can leave the surety liable for the full amount and ruin his own household. Suretyship should be undertaken only by one who is able and willing to pay the whole amount without harm to his own household.
Guaranteeing another's debt is warned against because it can bring lifelong bondage. It can reduce wife and children to poverty, sickness, and beggary. The warning applies to a father pressed to sign as security for a wealthy man's loan.
