Proverbs 7:13

So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,

The woman is not one particular individual but represents a class of seducers. She is bold and brazen in the attire of a harlot and subtle of heart, catching a young man void of understanding and kissing him with a shameless, impudent face. She entices him away from virtue and decoys him from the right path into the libertine's snare, under cover of darkness on the way to her house.

Her seduction leads to ruin and spiritual death, for its momentary pleasure ends in long years of bitter remorse. The youth follows her as an ox to the slaughter and as a bird to the snare, and her house is the way to hell going down to the chambers of death. That horrible fate is plainly warned against in the chapter's final verse unless he turns back, for a young man who enters the path of the libertine and will not heed wisdom's instruction is vulnerable to the flatterer.

The passage speaks plainly and without coarseness, setting forth vice and its results vividly and truthfully in its own true colors without making it attractive. In this way sins fatal to the health of soul and body appear exceedingly sinful, so that young men take warning in time to escape the grievous snares thick about their feet. The instruction must be read slowly and thought over for its deep philosophy. It joins the last part of chapter 5 and the last of chapter 9 in warning both men and women against condemned sins so the warning takes hold on the human heart, though its plain treatment of that sin makes it unfit to read aloud in a mixed assembly of men and women.

The verse exposes an ancient evil still at work, for the woman with that enticement is still present and temptation still lies in wait at every corner. It means the shameless solicitation of one who sells herself and not her time or labor. Such solicitation meets young people sent in dense ignorance to earn a living in great cities where moral dangers surround them, where a single false step on a perilous path can commit a daughter to a life of shame as a prostitute. That fate is increased when false modesty withholds knowledge of the great and sacred functions of the body and leaves passion to be learned surreptitiously in vulgar and corrupting forms. The harlot imagery also applies to morality enforced through political power, which is corrupt beneath its disguise and brings violence and division.
