Young Man Passes the Woman's Doorway at DuskBible World

Proverbs 7:8

Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,

The verse depicts a young man void of understanding passing under cover of darkness near her corner and going the way to the house of the strange woman, the woman with the attire of a harlot and subtle of heart. He walks in dense ignorance of passion and the sacred functions of the body, alone along a perilous path in the city where moral dangers surround inexperienced girls sent out to earn a living. His movement toward the house of the woman who would entice him from virtue marks the start of a downward path and serves as an example of a snare that can draw him into vice, moving toward one who will lead him into ruin unless he turns away before its terrible end.

It belongs to the warning against rejecting wisdom's instruction and reproof, as part of a vivid and truthful setting forth of vice and its results, whose momentary pleasures are followed by long years of bitter remorse, for the young man disregards reproof and chooses the path that leads to ruin and death. The path he chooses leads to ruin and death, for yielding is like going as an ox to the slaughter to his own death, since sexual sin is fatal to the health of soul and body and leads down to hell and the chambers of death.

The chapter gives a fuller description of the character of the class of women represented by the woman in Ecclesiastes 7:26-28. The verse is given to make such sin appear exceeding sinful so young men will take warning in time and escape the snares thick about their feet, for the strange woman is still present and temptation still lies in wait at every corner. It warns both men and women against the sins condemned there and ought to take hold upon the human heart, so it must be read slowly and thought over for its deep philosophy, speaking freely and plainly without coarseness and without making vice attractive, yet it is not suited to be read aloud in a mixed assembly of men and women. A single false step in that ignorance commits to a life of shame, adding to the ranks of unhappy women who sell not their time nor labor but themselves, and the silence of unwise mothers whose false modesty withholds knowledge sends daughters to the awful fate of the prostitute.
