Man Reading the Bible Beside a Table of GoldBible World
8:10Proverbs 8:10
Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
The speaker is heavenly wisdom itself, addressing the whole human family with wonderful instruction to be appreciated. The call means the Lord is earnestly seeking to instruct every soul who will be taught, to set in order the many things that need to be set in order, and to guide with wisdom. The wisdom offered enables the soul to rise from an imperfect, undeveloped state to understand what wisdom is, and gaining it involves the whole person and requires more than book learning.
Instruction and knowledge are more valuable than silver and choice gold, and therefore are to be received, chosen, and prized above material wealth. That superior worth extends beyond silver and choice gold to rubies and anything else that people desire. The wisdom to be sought is a lasting adornment of the soul, worth more than exterior ornaments and precious jewels. The verse calls people to heed God's wisdom and to bear a clear testimony to the binding claims of His law.
