Man Reading the Bible Beside a Table of Goldby CBPepper

Proverbs 8:11

For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

Wisdom is better than rubies, and none of the things that may be desired can be compared to it. It belongs together with receiving instruction rather than silver and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is more valuable than fine gold. Rather than silver and gold, instruction and knowledge are to be chosen, since nothing people desire can match the worth of wisdom.

It is the voice of heavenly wisdom speaking with wonderful instruction to the human family. That call to understand wisdom was put by the Lord Jesus in the mouth of His appointed instructor for the benefit of those living in this age. In it the Lord earnestly seeks to teach every soul who will be taught. It shows what true wisdom is and calls for understanding wisdom and hearing excellent, right, true and righteous words. True faith takes in the whole person and lifts the soul out of an imperfect, undeveloped state to understand it.

Its wisdom is to be appreciated and prayed for so that it may guide and set in order the many things that need to be set in order. It bears a decided testimony to the binding claims of the law of God, on the principle of not walking in the way of this people and not being conformed to this world. Rather than seeking golden ornaments for outward appearance, people should make earnest effort to gain wisdom as a richer adornment for the soul.
