The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
The speaker is Christ speaking of Himself before creation. To be possessed by the Lord in the beginning of His way before His works of old means He existed with God before creation, was with the Father from everlasting before the earth was made, and was set up from everlasting. He is eternal, pre-existent and self-existent, and there was never a time when He did not exist.
He is distinct from the Father yet one with the eternal Father in nature, in character and in purpose. He is the Word, the only begotten of God, the associate and co-worker of the Sovereign of the universe, who could appreciate the Father's purposes and share His joy in giving happiness to created beings. He is the only being who could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God.
He was by God as one brought up with Him, in close fellowship from everlasting, the Father's daily delight always rejoicing before Him, with God's delight in Him. He was present beside God when the foundations of the earth were appointed, when He gave to the sea His decree, and when the heavens and the earth were made. His divine glory and the angels' homage belong to Him by right and take nothing from God.
He is the only begotten Son who was to come to this world and become incarnate, the voice that said sacrifice and offering were not desired but a body was prepared and lo I come to do God's will. The One who was with God before the world was made humbled Himself to come to earth, take the sinner's place and give His life to ransom humanity, and that coming was the hiding of His glory. In connection with true wisdom, true faith takes in the whole person, raises the soul from an imperfect, undeveloped state, and enables it to understand what true wisdom is.
