Proverbs 8:23

I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.

The speaker is Christ Himself, the Word, the divine Son, the only begotten of God, declaring concerning Himself from everlasting. To be set up from everlasting is to have been possessed and established from eternity, in the beginning of His way before the works of old, before the earth and all its works were made. He is the pre-existent, self-existent Son of God, a distinct person yet one with the eternal Father in nature, in character, and in purpose.

He was the Sovereign's associate and co-worker who could appreciate the Father's purposes and share His joy in giving happiness to created beings, the only being who could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God. He was with the Father in close fellowship before creation, by Him when the foundations of the earth were appointed, as one brought up with Him, daily His delight and rejoicing always before Him. His heavenly glory and the angels' homage belonged to Him by right.

He was appointed from everlasting to be humanity's Mediator, substitute, and surety, the plan of salvation providing before the world was made for His divinity to be joined to humanity. So He came in human form at the appointed time, born as a babe in Bethlehem. The chapter presents what true wisdom is, and true faith takes in the whole man and enables the soul to rise out of an imperfect, undeveloped state to understand that true wisdom.
