When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
The speaker in this verse is Christ Himself speaking of His own existence before creation. The time described is when there were no depths and no fountains abounding with water, before the earth and its waters and the foundations of the earth were made. The words “brought forth” describe His existence from everlasting before the world was made, affirming His pre-existence and not a beginning within created time. The Lord possessed Him in the beginning of His way before His works of old and set Him up from everlasting, and He was present when the foundations of the earth were appointed.
He was by the Father as one brought up with Him, daily His delight and rejoicing always before Him, in close and continual fellowship with the eternal God. He is the Word, the only begotten of God, the pre-existent self-existent Son of God, one with the eternal Father in nature and in character and in purpose. As associate co-worker with the Father He could appreciate the Father’s purposes and share His joy in giving happiness to created beings, being the only being who could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God.
In this chapter heavenly wisdom speaks to the human family with wonderful instruction, calling people to receive wisdom and be taught by the Lord. The chapter shows what true wisdom is, and true faith, which takes in the whole man, enables the soul rising out of an imperfect, undeveloped state to understand it.
