While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
The speaker here is Christ Himself, the Word, the only begotten Son of God, speaking of Himself under the name of wisdom. He speaks as One already living while as yet God had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. Around this statement He is declared to have been possessed in the beginning of His way, set up from everlasting, and to have been present when the foundations of the earth were appointed and when the heavens were made. He is one with the eternal Father in nature, in character, and in purpose from eternity.
As the only being who could enter into all the counsels and purposes of God, He stands as God's associate and co-worker, able to appreciate God's purposes and to share His joy in giving happiness to created beings. He was brought up with God, daily His delight and rejoicing always before Him in close fellowship, and His existence before creation reveals His original divine glory and His everlasting existence. Wisdom's presence and instruction thus precede these parts of creation, and in this chapter heavenly wisdom speaks to the human family and offers instruction to all who are willing to learn. The chapter shows what true wisdom is, and true faith, taking in the whole man, enables the soul to rise out of its imperfect, undeveloped state to understand that true wisdom.
