A Woman Calls a Young Man into the Innby CBPepper

Proverbs 9:16

Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,

The speaker is Christ in the character of Wisdom, giving invitation and counsel to mankind. The call goes out to whoever is simple and lacks understanding, to turn in hither and receive Wisdom's instruction.

The saying belongs to a collection of wise sayings written chiefly by Solomon, probably in the early part of his reign, selected from the three thousand sayings spoken by him. That collection is a storehouse of practical wisdom, a summary of life's experience and wise counsels, and a faithful exhibition of the moral philosophy of the Bible. It serves as a manual of practical rules of life covering almost every part of moral and religious duty and the common experiences of everyday life.

It treats duty to family, neighbor, and friends and faithful service to God, setting forth modesty, chastity, temperance, forbearance, gentleness, industry and other virtues, the necessity of submission to correction, and warning against intemperance. It sets forth Jehovah as creator and governor of the universe and disposer of human destinies, who rewards piety and punishes evil. The verse is to be studied in the light of Scripture examples, and it calls the reader to examine whether he has in his life the beginning of wisdom.
