Wisdom Invites Guests to Her Feast Under Seven PillarsBible World

Proverbs 9:5

Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.

The speaker is heavenly Wisdom from above, Christ in the character of Wisdom, and her call originates with the immortal, invisible, only wise God, not with the wisdom of this world. She is a cherub full of love descended from above.

She invites mankind, the simple, those lacking understanding and those wanting understanding, and the starving, to turn in to her. Her charge is to forsake foolish ways and condemned sins, and to live in the way of understanding and become wise. The invitation and counsel are to be studied in the light of Scripture examples.

The house she built is the church, beautiful in truth, consistent, strong and lovely like the architecture of heaven. There she spreads a furnished royal table and feast, a royal banquet which is the marriage supper of the Lamb. Guests are already being gathered for those who love wisdom.

The bread and mingled wine are rich and wholesome food, which is present truth, the commandments of God and the testimonies of Jesus, truth that nourishes the soul. That food gives light and understanding to the simple and life to those who forsake the foolish. It strengthens the powers of the soul to advance further, as summer sun and showers nourish herbs and grains.

To the honest, zealous, sincere seeker truth holds multiplied charms, while error dries up the resources of the mind and leaves it in darkness, doubt and barrenness as drought dries the earth. Her service is pleasant and honorable with princely recompense, and all may be happy guests if they choose. So the starving should hasten to taste her food.

The invitation is sounded from the highest places of the city by servants, as the last gospel feast in the afternoon supper time, the closing hours of probation. It is joined by the Spirit and the bride saying Come while mercy lingers and room remains, with guests now being collected until the house is full. Soon the Master will rise and shut the door so that many will seek to enter and shall not be able, bringing a famine not of bread nor thirst for water but of hearing the word of the Lord.
