Psalms 102:23

He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

The verse belongs to a psalm expressly for the afflicted, a psalm of affliction. Its setting is the sorrows and afflictions of the Hebrew captives during the Babylonian captivity, especially in its later period under Belshazzar, when persecution and distress were greatest. It declares human strength failing in the way and life shortened in days.

It stands within a passage that contrasts mortal weakness and passing days with the LORD who endures forever, whose years are unmeasured and whose remembrance continues to all generations. That passage is a praise sung in Sabbath worship as God's memorial, with creation and the Sabbath as that memorial of the true Creator.

When compared with Hebrews 1:10, its passage shows that the name Jehovah belongs to the Son as well as the Father. It is part of a plea for mercy that every true believer may adopt as his own. It prompts prayer for God to be the speaker's strength and guide in place of failing human strength.
